For more than 15 years, Reziel Alarcon has dedicated herself to the community as a behavioral health specialist IV at Nanakuli High and Intermediate and as a Red Cross volunteer. After nearly losing her life in a car accident and undergoing two years of therapy and rehabilitation to treat her paralysis, she views volunteering as her “second chance” in life.
“I want to inspire people to volunteer, to give back, even in a small way,” she said. “I think that gesture is a good thing.”
We interviewed Alarcon to find out more about her shaka-worthy contributions to her work and community.

Stewards and management representatives from across Oahu joined us at the Hawaii Okinawa Center for our 2023 Joint Labor-Management Seminar. In one of our first in-person events since the pandemic, stewards were invited to “Re-Engage, Re-New, Re-Focus” on their roles of supporting their union brothers and sisters in the workplace. Randy Perreira, executive director of HGEA, told attendees that labor and management have to “reinvent” their approach to the workplace in order to retain and recruit a qualified workforce. “It’s time for folks to realize that employees have a right to demand better,” he said. “Be prepared to stand up for yourselves. Be prepared to take risks. It’s time to be bold.”
