Welcome back to The Negotiation Table! With this year’s legislative session now in the rear-view mirror and election campaigns ramping up, we’re unpacking the actions of lawmakers over the past few months and previewing the upcoming political action season.
Our guest is hardly a stranger to these topics. We would like to welcome a very good friend of HGEA, Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke. She served many years in the state legislature and has been on the forefront of labor rights, early childhood education and women in the workplace. Mahalo Lt. Gov. for all that you do!

U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda voted against sending the House Republicans’ partisan Farm Bill to the full House of Representatives, citing harmful provisions that would impact working families, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and state civil service jobs.
Randy Perreira, HGEA executive director applauded the move. “This bill opens the door to privatizing the jobs of civil servants who currently administer the SNAP program in Hawaii. This is unacceptable, and totally insulting of our local, highly trained government workers. It could lead to Hawaii SNAP recipients having to call an out-of-state call center to receive their benefits,” he said. “We appreciate Rep. Tokuda’s rejection of this damaging provision and her continued support for state workers.”
